Wulfen On The Hunt

Wulfen Work In ProgressI’m pleased to say that my Wulfen should be bounding across the tabletop this weekend!  Despite the week being very full on in the “real world”, it was very productive on the hobby front.  Because time was starting to become a bit more tight, I didn’t get round to doing any more experimentation with the black on my Knights (my first challenge not achieved) but did get the 50-odd Plaguebearers undercoated for my brother

The weather at the weekend was particularly rubbish so I pushed myself to get them undercoated on Friday late afternoon as the weather was a little better. I ended up airbrushing the skin colours rather than using a brush as I was finding I couldn’t get a decent enough finish on them and was in danger of obscuring the detail on the face. A short amount of time and the flesh was done, which also had the side benefit of putting a bit of overspray on the fur so this should be easier to blend in when I get round to it. I then went in with a brush and pushed the shadows and bumped up the highlights a bit. Colour wise I went for more brown-red in the flesh as I wanted to give the Wulfen the impression of a more leathery skin. Colour wise I based in Skrag Brown, shading with Scale 75 Arabian Shadow mixed with Skrag Brown and then highlighted with Cadian Fleshtone. The brush work used the same shadow and highlight colours but I took the highlight a step further with Kislev Flesh, basically just pushed the colours into the recesses a bit which is enough to make it look like it’s not been airbrushed.

Howls of the 13th Company – Warzone Fenris

The last week has been a pretty busy one with only a small amount of time for any hobby work.  There has been a fairly significant release for the Space Wolves and Daemons in the form of a new campaign pack – Warzone Fenris.  This introduces some updated rules for both, some new Space Wolves character miniatures (the long needed Iron Priest, Ulrik the Slayer and Krom Dragongaze on general release).  It also re-introduces Wulfen as a usable unit.  Both Space Wolves and Daemons also have been given a huge number of formations and the Daemons also got new Warlord Traits and psychic powers in addition to a mix of some really nice scenarios.

wulfen Because I didn’t spend as much money at the Horus Heresy Weekender as I anticipated, I treated myself to the “Saga” edition of Warzone Fenris which arrived via UPS on Monday.  I also purchased a box of Wulfen that arrived on Saturday (because Element Games have a better postal setup than Games Workshop).

I’ll not lie and say that I was extremely dubious about seeing Wulfen back in the game.  The new miniatures are massive, coming on 40mm bases and looking very bestial rather than marine like, plus I’m not a big fan of the new “ice” look weapons that seems to have become popular.  The studio paint job puts them in modern Space Wolves blue-grey armour rather than the old school grey colour, which deviates from the last incarnation where they wore an assortment of scavenged armour.

Using “Challenges” to Motivate

A slightly later post this week because I wanted to be able to post up a bit more progress on my Imperial Knight armour.  My challenge last week was to get all of the metallic colours down on the armour plates which I actually managed to achieve before the weekend.  Since then (I was away the whole weekend) I’ve managed to get all of the layers of Angron Red down – nine in total!  The result is fantastic and was well worth the effort.

Imperial Knight Red Stage 9

This coming weekend is the Horus Heresy Weekender so I’m not going to be able to get much done as there is only a couple of evenings left and I’ve mundane things like the washing to do.  I’ll suffice with:

Start spraying Corax Black

Take lots of pictures at the weekender

Although I’m only doing challenges a week at a time, the next challenge will be to mask off the guns so that I can get the red onto those, after that I’ve a mountain of Plaguebearers to undercoat for my brother which I really need to crack out sooner rather than later.

Now rather than finish the post off at that, I’ll waffle on a little bit about motivation. I’ve covered this once before, but this is a topic that I feel needs revisiting every now and again just to keep things fresh.

Cherries and Candies

Test Shoulder on KnightI’m starting to enjoy this 52 week challenge!  Week 3’s targets have been comfortably achieved and I’ve done a few other bits to boot!

Firstly I’ve created myself a Twitter account.  Although I’m generally against “personal” Twitter accounts where people post up the fact they’ve just made a sandwich or gone to the toilet, I can’t deny how easy it is to post up work in progress shots in comparison to every other method out there, plus hash-tagging as you go means it’s really easy to share pictures within the appropriate circles.  Secondly I’ve started up a WIP of my Knights on the 30k Forums.  I joined up months ago but in an effort to keep a bit of momentum going thought it made sense to start a WIP and get my face known a bit more. Week 2 Challenge – Walk Upon the Cracked Earth!

Knights Banner

Rocket Pod - Magnet 1Rocket Pod - Magnet 2I have a somewhat smug feeling currently having quite comfortably completed my Week 2 goals! All three Imperial Knights chassis/skeletons have been finished as far as I can without the armour plates in place. On top of this I’ve managed to magnetise the rocket pod onto the back of one of the carapaces. I ended up using four magnets in total, with three different sizes. Unlike other solutions, the magnet in the rocket pod is actually drilled and glued in place, most others just cut the stalk off and superglue a magnet that I’m sure snaps off fairly regularly.

I’ve done a little bit of work on one of the bases and have cut up parts from an old Tau tank and glued some in place along with some little crystals I picked up. I’ll need to make sure that I don’t go overboard with Xenos bits and pieces as I’m hoping to be able to use my Knights as part of a 30k Questoris Household.

My Week 3 challenge is going to need to be a little more flexible because the temperature in the UK has dropped quite a bit which prevents using spray primers and similar.

Prepare all armour plates (decorations, gap filling, washing) – including spares
a) Undercoat all armour plates Chaos Black
b) Complete all 3 bases

The Dust Settles on Week 1

Tidy Desk

Week 1 of my 52 Week Challenge has gone fairly well although it has rolled over a little due to the sheer scale of the amount of tidying and sorting I’ve had to do. Significant quantities of sorting, binning and re-arranging has occurred and I’ve now got numerous piles of old miniatures that have been bundled up and need to be passed onto new homes. Last night I finally sorted out my two modelling areas so they’re usable again and a lot of the bits underneath the desks have been relocated into better homes.

So what’s my Week Two challenge?

52 Week Challenge

#gw52Keeping motivated is probably one of the biggest challenges people face in most walks of life. For somebody like myself (and likely you) who paints and models, it’s very easy to get distracted by a new iOS game (I’m looking at you Freeblade), long running favourite game (Elite Dangerous for me) or other real life commitments (damn you dirty laundry mountain and injuries). People have lots of different ways of keeping going, I’ve heard some people who remove all potential distractions (including TV) and others who use painting as a reward after they’ve completed their ‘chores’. I’ve never had much success with other peoples methods yet, so I’m going to try something I saw being promoted by a couple of Warhammer Stores on Facebook – the 52 Week Challenge (#GWfor52).
